Coney Island Maybe

Coney Island Maybe started life a year or so ago as a vehicle for singer Ash Burton’s love of David Bowie and Lou Reed, but has since morphed into an edgy four-piece now playing original material, mostly penned by John and Ash, which combines gritty blues with dark ballads and acerbic social comment.

Something of a local ‘supergroup’, Coney features four experienced musicians, each with a strong pedigree forged through their long-time participation in the local music scene and beyond.  Ash doubles as the well-respected and much-loved frontman in popular covers band Velvet Goldmine; guitarist Nigel Bent will be familiar to many as the guitarist in Grey Lady and Local & Live regulars Higgs and the Bosons; guitarist/bassist John Lusher and percussionist/lapsteeler Arthur O’Hara both have their fingers in a number of musical pies – John performs regularly with country/folk combo Ukelear Fallout, rockabilly rousers Move Over Dali and 80s retro trio the Candy Stripe Messiahs; whilst Arthur can be seen out treading the boards with the aforementioned Candy Stripe Messiahs and acoustic rockers the Disciples of Lily, as well as performing regularly as a solo singer/songwriter known for his nimble-fingered jazzy blues guitar style and love of a good story.
