Crowds flock to the Pantiles for Local & Live 2009

The Pantiles today is very different to what you would have found over 400 years ago.

Rewind to the year 1606 where a young nobleman, Dudley, Lord North, Tunbridge Wells discovered small bubbling spring. The spring was to grow to a fashionable spa resort, attracting royalty and gentry who travelled for miles to taste the allegedly health-giving waters.

The Chalybeate Spring, as it came to be known, increased in popularity and by the mid 17th century the Upper and Lower walks had been laid out adjoining the spring. However, it wasn't until 1698 that Princess (later Queen) Anne, whose son Duke of Gloucester had fallen on the slippery ground, gave £100 for the paving of the walks with small square clay tiles known as 'pantiles'.

Today it is possible to stroll through The Pantiles' elegant, pedestrian walkways and explore the many quaint shops and restaurants available. Visitors can also be inspired by the year-round programme of music, art, literature and activities for families and friends to enjoy.

The Pantiles is the superb location for the annual Local and Live Festival and a perfect example of how mixing historical settings and original music brings the local communities together. The ethos of this unique event is to raise awareness of the incredible songwriting talent that resides in the local area.

During the four-day event, bands are given the opportunity to perform their music on the infamous Bandstand to crowds of over 10,000. Many members of the local community serve as volunteers during the event working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the event runs smoothly and professionally.

Local and Live is a not for profit event and relies solely on the sponsors and donations made by festivalgoer's, so we really appreciate all of your support!
